Fees

We know prospective clients will be very concerned about how much legal services can cost; this naturally covers our professional fees.

We always welcome people with family law problems to call us. Your first appointment appointment is without obligation and there’s no fee if you decide not to proceed. At this meeting, we’ll give you a simple summary of the law which applies to your situation. We can also recommend what what steps you could take next. However the law is very complex and we would need to give you formal advice, if and when you’re ready to proceed. If you decide to go ahead, you can make a decision as to how involved you want to be at every stage and how much you’d like us to do for you.

It is almost impossible to provide an estimate of costs without first having an appreciation of how complex your matter might be and what course of action you will instruct us to take. During your initial consultation with us, you can expect to receive a general estimate of the likely costs involved in your matter. Depending on the nature of your problem we can sometimes offer you a choice between the flexibility of hourly billing or the security of a fixed price fee arrangement.

Should you choose to engage Step Solicitors then we will provide you with a formal costs agreement and proceed in accordance with your instructions.

Often, potential clients think that all lawyers offer “No win, no fee” services for all types of legal services. This is generally reserved for compensation matters. where people have suffered loss as a result of the negligence of others.

This is not the case for family, traffic and criminal law.

Meeting with Us

What should I bring to the first consultation?

Please bring at least photographic ID.

Other than that, you do not need to bring anything with you to the first meeting.  However, it will assist us if you bring:

  • Any court documents or correspondence you may have received from the other party.
  • A chronology (or “time-line”) setting out relevant events.
  • Any relevant documents.

What can I expect to happen at the first consultation?

During this consultation, we will obtain relevant information from you.

  • Discuss your situation, advise you about our services and how we can help.
  • Discuss your different options.
  • Discuss our fee schedule and the likely legal costs involved.

Initial Telephone Calls

Don’t worry, we do not charge fees for preliminary telephone discussions with potential clients.

However, usually these calls will be limited to a maximum of 20 minutes and no professional advice can be given over the phone.

This is because even though you might think that your concern is very simple, once the facts and the law are explored, what would seem on the surface to be very simple can become quite complicated.

At this point we would the need to arrange a face to face meeting in order to find out some more information from you before taking the matter on and advise and represent you.

Legal costs

In most Family Law and Criminal Law matters, you will generally need to pay your own legal costs.  If you lose a case that you initiated, you could be liable to pay the other party’s legal costs, as well as your own. This is why we will initially provide you with an opinion as to the strengths and weaknesses of your particular case.

Costs agreements

The costs agreement that we give you will govern all of these issues. We encourage you to read our costs agreement when we give it to you. Before you sign it, you are encouraged to ask us any questions which might concern you.
