Criminal Law

Criminal law.  You and your matter counts.

Step Solicitors is here for you.

Don’t leave it to the day before court!! Prior preparation prevents poor performance.

Criminal law.  Being charged with a criminal law offence can be a terrifying experience. You can potentially face a range of penalties which can range from gaol to fines, or community service orders, or a combination of penalties. For more serious offences or if you are a repeat offender, there is a real risk that your freedom may being taken away from you.  Alternatively, you might face a fine which you can’t afford to pay. It is important that you get the best legal advice and representation. The speed at which you can receive advice is also an important consideration if you are facing criminal charges or if you need to have someone charged because they’ve hurt you.

Local Court appearances.

At Step Solicitors, we can help you if you have been issued a Court Attendance Notice (CAN), a Criminal Infringement Notice (CIN) or a fine. We will provide you with advice and if necessary, representation so that you can have the best possible chances of obtaining the best outcome possible.

Throughout the arrest and trial process, we will keep you informed so that you know exactly where you stand.

We are experienced in both the Commonwealth and New South Wales Criminal jurisdictions. This can cover a wide range of matters from property crime (theft and larceny), assault (including domestic situations), Apprehended Violence Orders (AVOs), drug offences and more serious indictable offences.

We also handle drink driving (DUI/PCA) charges.

If you have a question about an offence, or what the police are charging with, you can contact us by phone or by making a website enquiry direct to our office.  We will give you an initial free discussion about your situation over the phone and then you can decide if you need further assistance.

We appear in the local court for matters such as minor assaults or contesting AVOs.

We are committed to helping you obtain the best outcome for you, which can range from defending the criminal offence (pleading not guilty), to pleading guilty to an offence and us providing mitigation in order to reduce the penalty as low as circumstances allow.

Have you been charged with a serious indictable offence?

Should you be charged with a more serious, indictable offence, where a lengthy gaol term is a possible outcome and the risks are high, you will need more than just a solicitor alone defending your charge. We have access to barristers, both senior and junior who can provide specialist advocacy skills to your defence.

Apprehended Violence and Domestic

The Crimes Act 1900 (NSW) and the Crimes (Domestic and Personal Violence) Act 2007 has provisions in it which can help protect people who fear domestic violence and or abuse. Victims do not have to have had actual violence perpetrated on them, rather, the law protects people who have fears for their personal safety

The law gives powers to the Local Courts which enables them to make Apprehended Violence Orders (AVOs) and Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders (ADVOs) to protect people who need protection (or PINOPs).

Maybe the police or a person has taken an AVO out against you? You can defend it.
